SERVICES

Detroit Hispanic Development Corporation is dedicated to providing bilingual information and direct services to individuals through programs centered in the community. As such, the organization uses an integrative approach to delivering services. D.H.D.C works together with the individual, his/her family, and the institutions that affect and influence him/her daily such as the school system, the judicial system, FIA, and other institutions and organizations within the community.




Employment & Training Department
Work First ! Program-
D.H.D.C. operates as a Michigan Works! Affiliate, and provides TANF (welfare) recipients and others referred from FIA with job training and placement, case management and support services. Individuals participate in group sessions covering interviewing skills, resume writing, time management, communication skills, self-esteem, and work ethic.

Ex-Offenders Breaking the Chains-
As a Michigan Works, Affiliate under the City of Detroit's Workforce Development Department- WIA Special Populations- DHDC provides services to individuals age 22 and older who are on parole or probation, providing job readiness skills, employment-related training and counseling, supportive services, substance abuse counseling, job search/job placement assistance, job placement verification and retention follow-up services. The program is guided under the motto: "A warrior is not geared towards winning or losing... a warrior is geared towards the struggle".

Adult Education
EDUCATION DEPARTMENT

G.E.D Preparation (English/Spanish)-
Community residents can attend remedial math and reading, GED preparation in Spanish or English. Instruction varies between classroom-led and self-paced, utilizing the computer lab with tutorial software. Students also receive job placement services.

English as Second Language (ESL)-
Southwest Detroit comprises of many individuals whose dominant language is not English, and face daily challenges including job search/job placement. DHDC provides E.S.L basic, intermediate, and advance classes as well as provide job placement services.

Reading is Fundamental (RIF)-
DHDC provides free books to over 1,000 community children that provide culturally appropriate stories in both English and Spanish.

Childcare-
Our community has assessed childcare as a major barrier to continuing their education. DHDC provides in-house childcare for our students, while they are attending classes to accommodate this need.

Prevention Department - Youth Program Services

Vida Sana- is an employment and training program for youth 17-25 years of age providing life skills, employability skills training, and job placement as well as GED prep classes.

Street Smart- after-school program in HIV prevention services and substance abuse pre-treatment, treatment, and relapse prevention that targets "high-risk" Latino adolescents ages 11 - 17 as well as the youth's parents, legal guardians or significant adults in their lives.

In-school Violence & Substance Abuse Prevention- counseling for students at several local middle and high schools identified with behavioral problems with sessions designed to reduce the incidence of truancy, violence and inappropriate behaviors so that youth can be successful in school.

After School Drop-in Center- services youth ages 11 - 17 with training in graphic art design, videography, and deejaying as well as recreational activities. Urban Arts- using hip-hop as an alternative to save lives, DHDC's new initiative in the community offers an outlet for an urban expression in break dancing, deejaying, and graffiti art.

Summer Youth Program- operates several weeks during the summer for youths ages 11 - 18. Older youth ages 14 - 18 are able to gain work experience and training while earning minimum wage. All youth participate in substance abuse and violence prevention workshops, weekly field trips and community service projects.

 

DHDC Comadres - is a skills-building workshop for Latina women, promoting HIV prevention through HIV knowledge, safer-sex negotiation, and self-efficacy

Community Outreach- DHDC works with local agencies and schools to educate our community on the impact of HIV/AIDS on both the community and individuals. We advocate for policies and practices that will increase HIV awareness and promote HIV prevention, and continually seek out new and innovative ways to encourage regular HIV testing and other prevention strategies.

HIV TESTING & COUNSELING- we offer free, anonymous, and confidential HIV testing by state-certified HIV Counselors. Counselors and clients work together to establish an individualized risk-reduction plan. We collaborate with area agencies to ensure that those who test positive are connected with necessary resources.

Counseling Department

Substance Abuse Counseling - Individual, group and family counseling for low income and uninsured adults and youth referred for substance abuse issues. Each client participates in individual and group counseling sessions.

Individual/Family Counseling & Therapy- Counselors provide individual and family counseling for youth, adults and families. This includes anger management, communication, and behavioral modification. Counseling sessions are structured to stabilize a family by helping families learn to deal with life stressors and in learning and applying skills to better care for their child.

Anger Management- this program enables participants to better learn, practice and integrate the treatment strategies presented in the group sessions.

Parenting Program- this program provides parents who need support with school-age children with a series of parenting classes as well as advocacy, support services, and prevention education.

Parenting Advocacy Program- D.H.D.C. provides advocacy, parenting and leadership training to parents within various community schools. The program is designed to increase parental access to the schools and their involvement in their children's education.

C.O.S.A.S- Counseling staff provides age-appropriate education and support services for children whose family members are experiencing difficulties with drugs or alcohol. Services are provided in small group settings for youth between the ages of 4 to 17.

Community Activism Department

Community Action Against Asthma ( CAAA )-
D.H.D.C., works with the University of Michigan's School of Public Health, and other community groups throughout the city of Detroit organizing the community to take action and make policy change around environmental issues affecting the health of community residents.

Southwest Action for Empowerment- ( SAFE )- is a community fellowship program through Eastern Michigan University, which involves civic engagement of youth with voter registration, leadership development, community mobilization and awareness, with the goal of reducing youth violence.
