When ICE or Border Patrol agents detain an individual, families are often in a panic. Family members do not know where to turn to get information about their loved ones, or seek guidance and counsel about remaining family members particularly children.
In collaboration with the Washtenaw Interfaith Coalition for Immigrant Rights, the Southwest Detroit Urgent Response committee, and other immigration reform partners are hosting a community discussion and CALL TO ACTION meeting, April 20, 2011 at 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Detroit Hispanic Development Corporation, located at 1211 Trumbull Avenue, Detroit, MI 48216.
The meeting will focus on addressing ways that Southwest Detroit can help individuals and families determine
- Appropriate response to immigration actions,
- Assist individuals/families to find out the status of detained family members
- Ensure family/individual rights are being protected; children are safe
- Understand what steps can be taken in the documenting and evidentiary compiling processes.
Organizers believe that It is important that Southwest Detroit stories about ICE and Border Patrol experiences be told from a family and community perspective.. As a community, members attending the April 20, 2011 meeting want to ensure that affected families know that there is emotional and collective support available to them as they struggle with the many needs and issues that come with this emotional distress.
Let it be clear that many other community partners and coalitions have been urgently responding to unjust raids and harassments by ICE and Border Patrol officers in Southwest Detroit, this CALL TO ACTION is just one more step to support all the existing community efforts and responses as a collective community.
