Who We Are

Since its founding, DHDC has grown to include a wide range of comprehensive, bilingual services that reach over 5,000 youth, adults and families annually, primarily in Southwest Detroit. DHDC’s programs have received national recognition for their effectiveness in helping hard-to-serve populations. We are an organization that reaches out to the people that many others don’t want – gang members, ex-offenders, new immigrants, and those struggling with addiction. DHDC is also considered the leading organization in the regional Latino community in gang prevention/intervention and providing services to high-risk youth.

Mission Statement

Detroit Hispanic Development Corporation (DHDC) is a non-profit organization committed to make a difference by creating life changing opportunities for youth and their families.

History

In 1997, Angela Reyes founded the Detroit Hispanic Development Corporation from her living room, “because I was tired of burying children”. In an attempt to reduce local violence DHDC’s initial program formed after forging a truce with the leaders of several rival gangs by encouraging them to “retire” in return for jobs in local Hispanic-owned manufacturing companies.

DHDC is committed to meeting the needs of our community by providing quality, innovative and culturally appropriate programs and services, primarily in Southwest Detroit. DHDC works in partnership with education, business, and the community in order to overcome barriers to employment, education and healthy lifestyles.

We believe that by assisting individuals to recognize their own strengths and skills they are able to make life-changing choices that will transform their lives and community.
