DHDC Board Announces Retirement of Founder and Executive Director Angie Reyes, Appoints Lex Zavala as Interim Executive Director
The Board of Directors of the Detroit Hispanic Development Corporation (DHDC) announces the retirement of our founder and longtime Executive Director, Angie Reyes, effective May 31, 2025.
Angie founded DHDC in 1997 with a bold vision: to create a space where youth, families, and communities could thrive, free from violence and systemic barriers. For almost three decades, her unwavering dedication, visionary leadership, and deep love for our community have shaped DHDC into the powerful force for equity and justice that it is today. Her work has changed countless lives and inspired generations to continue the fight for opportunity, dignity, and inclusion.
As we prepare to honor Angie’s remarkable legacy, the Board is pleased to announce the appointment of Lex Zavala as Interim Executive Director, effective June 1, 2025. Lex has served in leadership at DHDC for many years, most recently as Chief Operating Officer, and brings a wealth of experience, trusted relationships, and a deep commitment to DHDC’s mission. The Board has full confidence in Lex’s ability to guide the organization through this transition while continuing to center the voices and needs of the community.
The Board will begin a comprehensive and inclusive search process for DHDC’s next permanent Executive Director in the coming months.
We invite our community to join us in expressing heartfelt gratitude to Angie for her extraordinary service and to support Lex as he steps into this important leadership role.
In solidarity,
