Empowering Our Community Through Homeownership Education

Detroit Hispanic Development Corporation (DHDC) successfully closed out the year with its final First-Time Homebuyer Workshop. Bringing together more than 26 registered community members eager to learn about the path to homeownership.

Held at DHDC on Trumbull Street, the in-person workshop created a welcoming space to gain practical knowledge, ask questions, and connect with trusted professionals.

A Collaborative Effort

This workshop was made possible through the generous sponsorship of Chase, whose commitment to financial education at DHDC has been fundamental.

We extend special thanks to Nora Jaafar- Chase Bank Lender, for supporting this event and helping attendees better understand the financial tools and resources available to them.

We also appreciate the support of KW Lakeside, who joined us by sending Lisa mcCallum, a REALTOR®, to share real-world insight and guidance.

Their participation helped attendees better understand the homebuying process from a professional perspective and reinforced the importance of having knowledgeable advocates throughout the journey.

What Participants Learned

During the workshop, attendees received hands-on education covering:

  • The core elements of a mortgage, including principal, interest, taxes, and insurance
  • Steps to get pre-approved and determine affordability
  • The role REALTORS® play in buying and selling a home
  • Down payment assistance programs, including Detroit’s $25,000 DPA

These topics are critical for first-time buyers navigating an often complex process, and participants left with increased confidence and clarity about their next steps.

Why This Program Matters

Homeownership is a powerful tool for building long-term stability and generational wealth. This workshop is designed to provide clear, accessible information and direct connections to trusted partners.

By investing in education and collaboration, we help ensure our community members are equipped to make informed decisions that support their financial futures.

As we close out this year’s workshops, we are grateful to our partners, presenters, and participants who continue to make this program impactful.

DHDC looks forward to expanding these opportunities in the year ahead and continuing our commitment to empowering Detroit residents on their path to homeownership.
