On Tuesday, February 25, 2026, the Detroit Hispanic Development Corporation (DHDC) welcomed community leaders, partners, and supporters for an unforgettable evening at the RECD & TECD Mix & Mingle—a gathering that brought youth innovation to the forefront and showcased what’s possible when opportunity meets talent.

From the moment guests arrived at DHDC’s headquarters, the energy in the room was clear: this was more than an event—it was a live demonstration of the future being built by Detroit’s young people.

Innovation in Action

Throughout the evening, attendees engaged directly with students from the Robotics Engineering Center of Detroit (RECD) and the Technology Education Center of Detroit (TECD). Youth participants led conversations, demonstrated their work, and shared the skills they are developing through hands-on learning in robotics and emerging technologies.

The highlight of the night was the highly anticipated Go-Kart Grand Reveal.

With support from the Ford Foundation, a group of students successfully transformed a used gas-powered go-kart into a fully electric vehicle. This project represented months of dedication, collaboration, and problem-solving—bringing together engineering concepts and real-world application.

More importantly, it reflected something deeper: young people stepping into their potential as innovators, builders, and leaders.

The Power of Mentorship

The event was presented by Joaquin Nuño-Whelan, President of Lincoln (Ford Motor Company), whose journey from robotics mentor to industry leader embodies the long-term impact of investing in youth.

His connection to the program served as a powerful reminder that mentorship is not just about guidance in the moment—it’s about opening doors and shaping futures.

Throughout the evening, mentors were recognized for their commitment to supporting and guiding students, reinforcing the essential role they play in every success story.

A Community of Support

The Mix & Mingle brought together a strong network of supporters, including long-time partners such as Ideal Group and Ford Philanthropy, alongside new faces from the tech and innovation sectors.

These connections are critical. They represent more than support—they are pathways to opportunity, collaboration, and continued growth for the youth we serve.

Investing in What’s Next

Beyond celebration, the event carried a clear purpose: to raise critical funds that sustain DHDC’s Youth Department and expand access to programs like RECD and TECD.

Every conversation, every connection, and every contribution helps ensure that more young people have access to the tools, mentorship, and experiences needed to succeed in today’s workforce.

Moving Forward

The RECD & TECD Mix & Mingle was a powerful reminder that when we invest in young people, we invest in the future of our communities.

At DHDC, that future is already taking shape—one project, one mentor, and one opportunity at a time.
