General Motors Supplier Diversity will serve as the 2014 Dream Makers’ Gala Title and Continuing Education Sponsor. The sponsorship includes funds that contribute toward DHDC’s Youth Ambassador Scholarship Program, and ensuring that families have a safe place to grow and learn with nourishment and support.
General Motors has been involved with Detroit Hispanic Development Corporation for 17 years, since the inception of the organization. DHDC’s first program, Gang Retirement and Continuing Education and Employment, widely known as GRACE, began by bringing leaders from the Hispanic Manufacturing Center and local gang leaders together to give them jobs so that they could leave the gang life behind.
Individuals who had previously been enemies became coworkers, and rode side-by-side together in vehicles, generously provided by General Motors, to different work sites in Southeast Michigan. At the end of the program, General Motors hosted their first ever graduation ceremony for 60 program participants at the Renaissance Center in Downtown Detroit.
“Without GM’s support, we would not have been able to provide these young people the opportunity to change their lives and community,” says Angela Reyes, Executive Director. “We are so thankful for General Motors’ support, and together we continue making a difference in Southwest Detroit.”
