FANTAZAMA SOFT GRAND OPENING
Fantazma Market & the Porter Street Night Market is a new initiative being developed by the Detroit Hispanic Development Corporation and local businesses Mudgie’s Deli & Wine, and the Batch Brewing Company, all located in the Corktown neighborhood of Detroit. The two project goals are to develop a job and entrepreneurial pathway for Detroit residents who are also DHDC program participants, and Detroit-owned small businesses. By combining workforce development with this social entrepreneurial programming, DHDC will create rotating retail opportunities for up to 12 food and retail businesses to operate within its building and outdoor space. In addition, this will be creating up to an additional 50 entry-level hospitality jobs for young adults to assist with operations. Most of the funding for these positions will be paid for through DHDC’s partnership with Grow Detroit’s Young Talent.
“Fantazma” is Spanish for “Ghost”. Ghost Food Halls combine the “ghost kitchen” concept, which serve meals exclusively for delivery, with the “food halls” dining concept that has become popular in recent years. DHDC wants to adapt that idea, including the “Fantazma Marketplace” for retail businesses to operate alongside these food businesses in a prime developing area of Detroit. Fantazma Marketplace will also include an outdoor patio space, as well as activation space in Dean Savage Park which is centrally located between DHDC and the partnering businesses, creating additional vendor and seating spaces for other local restaurants lacking safe, outdoor dining opportunities.
Porter Street Night Market will be a weekly vendor market that will give over 100 startup businesses as well as established retail and food businesses, opportunities to put their products in front of consumers, prove new concepts, monetize ideas, and incubate small businesses on a weekly basis. Porter Street Night Market businesses will be a pipeline of local entrepreneurs who could additionally participate in the Fantazma marketplace, further proving their business concept, and preparing these businesses to move to permanent brick and mortar spaces in the future. Fantazma and Porter Street Night Market will focus on Black and Latinx owned business, ensuring 65-75% of impacted businesses are Black and Latinx owned. In addition, both markets will provide opportunities for Black and Latinx artists to perform and display their art creating further opportunity for Black & Brown communities while creating a destination spot for cultural exchange. The Porter Street Night Market was developed in collaboration with Stephen Roginson of Batch Brewing Company and Greg Mudge of Mudgie’s Deli and Wine. With both Fantazma and Porter Street Night Markets sharing goals as well as proximity, it was only logical to bring the initiatives under the umbrella of the Detroit Hispanic Development Corporation, connecting the opportunities for entrepreneurs.
